Having a Birthday around Christmas makes me very excited about the whole occasion. So in the spirit of Christmas I was able to utilise the laser technology we have been exploring at the School of Jewellery and also the UP 3D printer to create Christmas tree decorations. Laser cut wreath and robinThe first decoration I made was using a laser cutting machine for this I started off by looking at the properties. We had a set of parameters to work in and were using 2mm Perspex. In laser cutting there are 3 line settings associated with the laser and each corresponds to a colour.
I made sure to make components that could be glued together post production and made a small hole to thread a ribbon to tie the decoration to the tree. When I got it back from the printer I was surprised by the detail the laser was able to achieve. I then assembled my components and used Chloroform to glue the pieces together by using the chemical to melt and fuse together the sheets of Perspex. Then for the final touch I added glitter to the bow for a bit of festive glitz! UP 3D printed Bauble For this decoration I wanted to create a bauble with lots of pattern and possibly some text. Artcam was the best software for this and I was able to use an image of Christmas jumper pattern and Christmas banner to import as bitmaps and create relief patterns.
Once I had created the pattern I saved it as a clip art relief and worked on creating a star shaped bauble. When I was happy with the rounded relief I was able to then add my relief patterns from my clip art folder so that the pattern was smooth to the surface of the bauble. The UP printer is a great modelling tool and was perfect for this as I could use the shell setting to create a hollow bauble. Otherwise I don't think my poor Christmas tree would hold the weight of it! It did take 2 attempts as the detail wasn't quite right on the first print but after changing a few settings and scaling up the bauble to capture more of the relief I was happy with the result.
